The MIRIS Base Map files are in a Shapefile format once the files have been 'unzipped'. Many Shapefiles exist for the same county base map. Each 'theme', transportation, utilities, etc. is separated into a different Shapefile.

Process Description:
Topographic quadrangle reference points were used to correctly position the map features with an error of .02% or less. Base features were digitized from USGS topographic quadrangles in Microstation in a sequential order. Plots were compared to the topographic quadrangles to ensure positional accuracy. Design files converted into Arc/Info coverages. Files were cleaned and built using a 3 foot tolerance. Level codes were joined to all lines and/or polygons. Level codes were then converted to text descriptors. Extemporaneous fields were dropped from the attribute tables. Coverages were exported to shapefile format. Double-sided rivers were converted into polygons and checked using DRG data.
