Landtype Associations of Northern Lower Michigan (Section VII) was created in cooperation with the Northern Lower Michigan Ecosystem Mangement Project. The Land Type Association classification is one layer in the ecological classification hierarchy now being used in Michigan to understand the patterns and processes that dominate the landscape at different geographic scales.

Purpose:

Generate map products and a report to support ecoregional planning in the Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The Land Type Association classification is important to land managers and planners to understand the patterns and processes that dominate the landscape.

Supplemental_Information:

Landtype Associations (LTAs) were digitized, processed, and analyzed for thirty-five counties in northern lower MI. Final product includes LTA maps by county, by subsection, and by northern Lower Michigan. Detailed descriptions and discussions of LTAs are available in six individual documents by subsection. Documents are available through Michigan Natural Features Inventory. Description of approach: Several data layers were incorporated in the delineation of landtype associations (LTAs). Data layers were mapped to the scale of 1:63,360 (1 inch = 1 mile) to allow their comparison on a light table. As a first step, USDA soil surveys and the glacial landform map of Michigan (Farrand and Bell 1982) were interpreted to identify landform features, typically differentiated on the basis of combinations of slope class, soil texture, and drainage class characteristics, as defined by the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service. These landform features were considered first approximation landtype associations (LTAs) and were compared to maps of presettlement vegetation (Comer et al. 1995). The assumption was that abiotic (physical) differences between adjacent LTAs should result in corresponding differences in the dominant vegetation, or at least different patterns in the mosaic of the dominant forest communities. Typically there was good agreement between presettlement vegetation and LTA boundaries, and description for the proposed LTA units were then written. In some cases there was not good agreement between presettlement vegetation and first approximation LTA boundaries. In these cases, additional information was used to refine boundaries. First, photo-based soils maps from recent county soil surveys were studied to identify more appropriate boundary locations. The photo-based maps often allowed important differences in land use, slope class, and drainage class to be identified. Then, 1:24,000 topographic maps, with an overlay of the presettlement vegetation data, were studied to locate ecologically significant topographic boundaries. Following this refinement of boundaries, LTAs were described. The Project References section of this document details the sources of information used to delineate LTA boundaries. LTAs are relatively local landscape ecosystem units based largely on glacial landforms. Glacial landforms can be viewed as large, broadly defined units, called either physiographic systems or major landforms (such as outwash plains or moraines (Barnes et al. 1998, page 38). These large landforms can be further divided into minor landforms; for outwash, examples of minor landforms might be pitted outwash, or broad outwash plain, or a narrow outwash channel. We chose to include both major and minor landforms within our concept of LTAs by utilizing a four-digit code for LTAs. By lumping (left digit only), LTAs are the equivalent of the major landform (physiographic system), while separating LTAs by the second, third, or fourth digit is equivalent to minor landform. Different management and informational needs will likely justify different scales of LTA description. We do not yet know the appropriate level of delineation for many management needs and are therefore maintaining as much information in our map codes as possible until we have adequately tested our LTAs.

The .dgn files were converted to PC Arc using DGNARC, and stored in single precision format. The PC Arc coverages were CLEANed using a dangle length of 0 and a software default fuzzy tolerance. The PC Arc coverages were PROJECTed from State Plane (3 zones) to Michigan GeoRef and MAPJOINed to create the section VII coverage.

The LTA section VII coverage was IMPORTed to Arc/Info and stored in double precision format. The coverage was CLEANed and sliver polygons between the State Plane zone 2 and 3 boundary were ELIMINATEd. An arc attribute table (.aat) was built so arcs could be attributed as LTA, Section, and Sub-Subsection. The coverage was then INTERSECTed with the STCO24 coverage to provide the ability to display and query the LTAs by county units.
