The data set was created to facilitate production of point maps showing distributions of fish in Michigan, both historical and current. The data came from MDNR (approximately 63,000 records, 5000 sites, dating from 1923), UMMZ (35,000 records, 4700 sites, dating from 1874), United States Geological Survey, Great Lakes Science Center (USGS/GLSC) (34,000 records, 4600 sites, dating from 1958), United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) (33,000 records, 4100 sites, dating from 1947), Michigan River Inventory (MRI) (8000 records, 546 sites, dating from 1937). University of Michigan Center for Great Lakes and Aquatic Science (UM/CGLS) (1,400 records, 100 sites dating from 1982) and miscellaneous sources (600 records, 600 sites, dating from 1923). The MRI collections were made by Drs. Paul W. Seelbach, Michael J. Wiley and students from the UM School of Natural Resources and Environment combined with collections made mostly on large rivers by the MDNR. The UM (CGLS) collections were made by Dr. David Jude. Hybrids and unidentified species were excluded from all data sets. In the UMMZ collections, the identification of species has been painstakingly addressed and voucher specimens are available for amost all of the fish collections. However, in the other collections identification of species is accepted but, in most cases, no voucher specimens for verification of identity are available.

Points were mapped using thier location according to either latitude/longitude or to the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). In the former case, the latitude and longitude in decimal degreese were used as x and y coordinates in an even theme. In the latter case, points were mapped using the PLSS ArcView point coverage ("mitrs") showing centroids of sections, created by Jennifer Kotanchik and maintained by the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, University of Michigan.

In some records for Lakes Michigan and Superior the ten minute by ten minute statistical grid square was the only location information. In these instances each point was placed in the center of the grid square. The coordinate for these center points were taken from the point coverage ("statistical_grid_10_min_points.shp") created by Shannon Brines, and obtained from the State of Michigan's Center for Geographic Information.

These data were combined with sites already in geographic projection, and all points were then added as an even theme. When neither latitude/longitude, township/range/section, nor statistical grid square was available for a record, an attempt to locate it was made. These records were georeferenced when necessary either by on-screen digitizing (using pre-existing data layers showing political boundaries, streams, railroads, and roads; eg., the data from CGLAS/UM was georeferenced by on-screen digitizing of points in relation to Wessex 1994 line data), by looking up locations using federal [United States Geological Survey Geographic Names Informations System (USGS GNIS)] data or other references (e.g., Michigan Lake Inventory by County).
